CARB OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) Testing is a state-regulated emissions compliance test required by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) under the Clean Truck Check program. This test applies to 2013 and newer diesel-powered vehicles equipped with an OBD system capable of transmitting emissions-related data.

During the test, a certified technician connects to the vehicle’s diagnostic port to securely download emissions-control system data, including:

Engine & emissions-related fault codes (active, stored, & pending)

System readiness monitors

Aftertreatment & emissions system performance history

VIN, ECM calibration, and emissions compliance identifiers

The goal of CARB OBD Testing is to verify that the vehicle’s emissions system is functioning properly without tampering, deletion, or malfunction, ensuring clean air compliance and preventing excess diesel pollution in California.

Upon successful testing, results are electronically submitted to CARB and a confirmation receipt is provided to the vehicle owner or fleet manager.

Opacity and Visual Inspection (OVI)

Opacity Test Portion (2012 and older Diesel engines)

A smokemeter is used to measure the opacity (%) of the exhaust during snap acceleration testing.
Results must meet CARB-required standards based on vehicle model, engine year, and weight class.

Testing includes:

2️⃣ Exhaust sampling via approved smokemeter
3️⃣ Multiple test cycles to ensure accurate results
4️⃣ Recorded opacity readings and pass/fail determination
